Broncomania: Nothing short of Lombardi expected

"Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." -Vince Lombardi.

It's fitting that the NFL's ultimate prize, the Lombardi Trophy, memorializes an individual who set the standard for "greatness" in professional sports. Each NFL season, only one team can be immortalized within Lombardi's timeless legacy. Football is war - one winner, one loser - and "effort" awards are not given to teams who play hard, but fall short.

Thus, if the Denver Broncos fail to return the Lombardi Trophy to the Mile High city, should the season be considered a disappointment?

Absolutely. John Elway is revered as a Mile High legend for his Super Bowl victories, and his unwillingness to lay down his pads until he achieved that ultimate victory. Elway’s dedication to perfection solidified the Broncos franchise within the rich tradition of Denver’s community. Today, Broncomania establishes the Mile High City as one of the NFL’s most elite fan bases, on par with historic teams including Green Bay and Chicago.

As one of the NFL’s most impassioned competitors, expect Peyton Manning to play at a Mile High level throughout the playoffs. Are the 2012-2013 Denver Broncos capable of duplicating the Super Bowl success of this franchise in the late 1990s? One thing is certain, Manning will be more prepared than his opponents on this potential “Revenge Tour.” The 5280 faithful can count on that fact during the upcoming week of playoff purgatory.

2012: The Denver Broncos Reformation

For over a half-century the Broncos brand has provided Denver's community with a shared heritage. In 1960, historic Mile High Stadium hosted the Broncos, Denver's first professional sports team, AFL charter season. The stadium, originally constructed in 1948 for Denver's minor-league baseball team, served as a tangible manifestation of the "Mile High" identity, the "5280 Ethos," until its deconstruction in 2002.
Although, the Broncos no longer play in the original stadium, fans continue to associate home games at "Sports Authority field at Mile High" with historic Mile High Stadium. Jim Saccomano, Broncos' VP of Public Relations, effectively summarizes Mile High stadium's rich legacy,
"Mile High Stadium was the birthplace of Broncomania. The stadium nurtured both the fans and the team, and watched Broncomania become a national phenomenon."
After more than 5 decades in Denver, the Broncos' resume includes: 18 playoff appearances, 6 AFC Championships – T-2nd for most all-time (8-Steelers, 6-Patriots), 2 Super Bowl wins, and an all-time regular season record (1960-2012) of 416-375-10. More importantly, the Broncos represent one of professional sports' most die-hard fan bases. Since 1960, every season in the Mile High City has been sold out. Broncomania - a Mile High fanaticism emerging from the city's oldest sports tradition.

Mile High QB & VP
The Broncos 8-game winning streak is a testament to the 180° turnaround of this organization. In 2010, under Josh McDaniels, the Denver Broncos posted a 3-10 record as of Week 14. This season, John Fox has led Denver to a 10-3 (5-0 division) record, establishing the Broncos as an AFC Championship contender. With the offseason addition of hall-of-famer, Peyton Manning, the Broncos young playmakers shine. Moreover, Denver's defense continues to repress any opposing momentum with its electrifying pass rush - t-1st in the NFL with 39.0 sacks (as of Dec. 8, 2012).

In 1997-1998, the Broncos won back-to-back Super Bowls under John Elway's command. Many Bronco fans cite those years as the "glory days," considering the 1998 team (14-2 record) the best in the franchise's illustrious history.

Does this '12 team deserve comparisons to the '98 Denver Broncos? Is Broncomania witnessing the return of a dynasty?

Week 13 Preview: Broncos Defense Pivotal for Seventh-Straight Victory

Following an unexceptional Week 12 victory at Arrowhead Stadium, the Denver Broncos (8-3) will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5) in the Mile High City. A Denver victory will solidify the Broncos as a legitimate AFC contender in the eyes of both the "5280 Faithful" and the national media.

What makes a non-conference game against Tampa Bay paramount to the Broncos' AFC "elite" status? Jeff Legwold of First-and-Orange reminds fans that a Broncos team has not won seven consecutive games since John Elway led Denver to its second-straight Super Bowl victory in 1998. For Broncomania, achieving this milestone symbolizes the Mile High City's rich football tradition – the long-awaited rebirth of an NFL dynasty.

The palpable buzz around this 2012 Broncos team is momentous for the greater Denver community. However, "it's not over til' the fat lady sings." Although the Buccaneers are barely above .500 and playing for a wild-card playoff bid at best, Tampa Bay's five losses were decided by a total of 23 points (4.6 points per game). Moreover, these losses came against teams with a combined record of 33-24 (.727 winning percentage). Don't expect Josh Freeman and this young Tampa Bay team to hand over the seventh-game, like Brett Favre gifted Michael Strahan his record-breaking 22nd sack. Simply put, Tampa Bay at Denver – Game of the Week.

Spoiler Alert – Peyton Manning will dismantle Tampa Bay's 32nd-ranked secondary at Sports Authority Field on Sunday. However, Josh Freeman & Co. possess a comparably high-powered offense (over 28 points per game) accented by Doug Martin, the NFL's fourth-ranked Running Back. A Mile High "Shoot-Out" seems inevitable. Look for key turnovers in the second-half to determine the final outcome at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Broncos Defensive Keys

1. Consistent Pressure on Josh Freeman
Von Miller's reputation commands attention from opposing offensive lines. Despite this reality, the AFC Defensive Player of the Month (November) has posted 14.0 sacks on the season (8.0 in November). Early pressure from Miller will force consistent double-teams, opening gaps for Jack Del Rio's blitz packages. Additionally, defensive line success restricts the offense to Shotgun formations, lessening Doug Martin's impact at Running Back. Finally, if the Denver defense can maintain pressure through the first half, Tampa Bay's young Quarterback, Josh Freeman, will likely make a crucial mistake.

2. Woodyard – Maintain WLB Gap Responsibilities (Negate Counters/Cutbacks)
In Week 12, the Kansas City Chiefs exploited an overly aggressive Broncos defense – over-pursuit on the weak-side. Jamaal Charles was able to cut-back through running lanes with up-and-coming linebackers Wesley Woodyard and Danny Trevathan out of position. Expect Woodyard's patience on the weak-side to directly impact the Broncos' success against Tampa Bay's premier backfield.

3. "Bend-Not-Break" Attitude
Despite Kansas City's success driving into Denver territory in Week 12, the Broncos defense refused to allow a touchdown, holding the Chiefs to three field goals (Final: 17-9). If the Broncos defense failed to stop those three drives, allowing three touchdowns instead, the Chiefs win 21-17. Despite spending a majority of the first half on the field, the Denver Broncos defense showed its strong character. Look for the defense to continue this trend under the tutelage of Jack Del Rio and key veterans like Champ Bailey

The Broncos Defense: Call of the Wild

FIGHT OR FLIGHT – a Quarterback's subconscious choice at the line of scrimmage. Philip Rivers clearly selected Option C, all out retreat. In Week 11, the Denver Broncos hosted the San Diego Chargers for an AFC West-dictating grudge match. A Broncos loss at the hands of Rivers & Co. jeopardizing their chances for a playoff berth.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. Von Miller and the Broncos defense extinguished any life the Chargers' struggling offense brought to the Mile High City. "Broncomania" was palpable as Von Miller single-handedly devastated the Chargers' passing attack, recording three of Denver's four sacks (Dumervil 1). Miller's statistical contributions from Week 11 add to the Denver defense's NFL-leading total of 35 sacks on the season. More importantly, Von Miller's intimidating reputation continues to effect opposing Quarterbacks, forcing errant throws and poor decision-making.

Denver's offensive production continued to be inconsistent in Week 11. Communication breakdowns between Peyton Manning and the Broncos' Wide Receivers were evident in the first quarter, highlighted by Eric Weddle's interception return for a Touchdown. However, Denver's defense prevented San Diego from gaining any momentum on offense, forcing four straight punts in the first quarter. The Denver offense eventually found their rhythm in the second quarter, initiated by a 13-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas.

The 30-23 victory over the San Diego Chargers marks Peyton Manning's 148th career regular-season win, tying John Elway for second most in NFL history – Brett Favre holds the record with 186 career wins. Although Manning reached a historic milestone on Sunday, the defense's relentless 60-minute performance deserves the game ball.
